Measles on the Rise?

The New York Times and Washington Post report that U.S. measles rates are now at their highest point since 2001. On a related note, Science Progress just posted an interview with Dr. Saad B. Omer on vaccine policy.

One wonders how much of a public health crisis we need before we rethink our vaccine exemption policies—particularly given that misconceptions floating around about a connection between vaccines and autism are driving more parents to opt against MMR.

One Response to “Measles on the Rise?”

  1. Steve says:

64 cases (with no deaths) is hardly a crisis. And if vaccinations are effective, then those who are vaccinated have nothing to fear. Those who choose not to vaccinate know the risks, and that is their choice.

Forced medication, which is really what you seem to be talking about, is about as un-American as you can get. But trampling on personal liberites is okay, I guess, if done in the name of the “greater good”. Personally, I don’t care to force medication on people. The price is too high. And what happens when you force the needle in a child’s arm, and he dies from the vaccien itself (happens in a small %, for all vaccines). Who will be responsible for that?
